Ah, patios… there’s just something so romantic about them…
Whenever we think of a patio, our minds instantly jump to an almost movie-like scene where a couple in love is sitting, comfortably snuggled under a blanket on their picture-perfect patio, while the rain is pouring outside, yet they don’t seem to be affected by it even the slightest.

However, what if your patio is not picture-perfect? What if your floor paint is peeling, and nobody is allowed to sit in that rocking chair for almost two summers now because it’s too old and just the thought of putting anything heavier on it than that stray cat that likes to sleep on it at night scares the yikes out of you?
Well then, my friend, it’s time to put on those reading glasses and get comfortable because, oh boy, do we have a treat for you! Here are just some ideas on how you can turn your patio, or any other outdoor space, into what you always wanted it to be.
First things first
Before we start exploring all of the style and design ideas, we – or rather you – need to take care of the basics. That means that you should inspect your patio, gazebo, outdoor room – you get our point – and determine the state it is in. If anything needs to be fixed you should start from there.
Once all the repairs are over, check the paint. If the paint is peeling, chipping or just about to do so make sure you strip it and apply a fresh coat. There are numerous outdoor paints on the market so make sure you find something that’s of high quality and durable, to avoid repainting every single year.
Of course, this is also the perfect time to start considering the design, since the choice of color of the paint can greatly affect the final look. Once all the rough work is finished, you can move on the prettier side of redecorating.
Open or closed?
To begin, you need to decide whether you want to have an open or closed outdoor space. The perks of the first are that nothing will get between you, the fresh air and the outdoors. However, that is also its biggest flaw.

An outdoor space or a patio that’s completely open requires constant maintenance because even the slightest air movement will bring in dust and whatnot. Of course, with the closed option that won’t be the case.
Alternatively, you can opt to install sliding doors and windows which you can open whenever you feel like it. So, this is probably the best option.
Furnish with a purpose
Next, think about what you want to use your area for. Will you be hosting parties there, or just enjoying your morning coffee/evening tea?
If you want to leave room for various options, you can get a retractable table and folding chairs and use as many as you need at any given moment.
The beauty of these pieces is that you can use all of them when needed, or neatly fold them and store them away when you don’t.
Plus, these pieces are can go well with almost any design since they are usually pretty plain-looking which leaves a lot of room for interesting, or rather unusual decor pieces. If you have a small patio space have a look here for some inspiration.
Sun protection
As much as it is important to spend time outside, and as much as sunlight is good for us, you still need to be careful.

Prolonged exposure to the sun can cause various skin conditions, so make sure you create a shaded area. A retractable pergola is definitely an option, but it’s not very stylish.
And since you should always go for a more stylish option, whenever possible, think in terms of shade sails. These come in numerous sizes and styles, so make sure to check them out.
Quality shade sails made of light fabrics will instantly elevate the look of your outdoor area.
Everybody out!
If you have enough room, you can maximize the use of your outdoor area and create a barbecue area, a bar or a spa on your patio. Wait a minute…. not OR a spa, AND a spa.
Think about it, if you plan everything right, and again only if you have enough room, you can create an area that will feature all summer favorites: barbecue, cocktails and relaxing in a spa.
Light up the area
When it comes to lighting your outdoor area, you have a lot of options. However, keep in mind that LED lights are always the best way to go.
For an interesting, almost magical backdrop hang a few strings of fairy lights; to enhance the boho vibe, put tea candles in mason jars and hang them wherever you can; for a luxurious feel implement a fire bowl that will also work as an amazing centerpiece and a source of additional heat on those chilly nights.
If you want to be completely eco-friendly and if you’re going for that natural vibe, add some solar lights. See? Endless possibilities!
You should never settle for anything that’s less than perfect, especially if we’re talking about an area where you are supposed to relax and enjoy. So, stop reading and start decorating!
