Cleaning and organising your home can be a dreary task, especially when you let clutter pile up. However, keeping your home organised and tidy will also make it healthier, more beautiful and pleasant.

Not only will this boost its appeal, but it will also enhance your mood. So, here are the top tips from an interior design expert that can help you turn your home into a clean and healthy haven.

1. Declutter your space

Clutter creates an atmosphere of messiness in your home, which can make you feel cramped and agitated. Therefore, it’s crucial that you get rid of clutter and eliminate useless items that just sit around and collect dust.

Clean Home

You should declutter room by room until you get rid of everything you don’t need. If you haven’t used any item for more than six months, you probably won’t use it at all, so don’t hesitate to throw it away. To get some more ideas on decluttering, check out this article on living minimally and with less stuff.

2. Use healthy cleaning products

You probably use cleaning products several times a week or even on a daily basis. This keeps you exposed to numerous toxic chemicals contained within these products, which can cause different health problems, such as irritation, breathing difficulties, allergic reactions, etc.

Therefore, you should switch to healthy, green cleaning products or make your own cleaning solutions by using basic ingredients, such as vinegar, baking soda and lemon.

This way, you’ll make sure that your home is both clean and healthy.

3. Make your bed

Making your bed is a simple way to tidy up your bedroom, but many of us skip it because we’re in a hurry or simply deem it unnecessary.

However, the moment you make your bed, your room will seem more organised and airier. Make this into your daily habit and you’ll have a tidy bedroom in a minute.

4. Keep the surfaces clean

The easiest way to keep your space organised and prevent clutter from piling up is to keep your surfaces, such as desks, tables, counter-tops and coffee tables clean.

Clean Home Surfaces

You can just place one or two items as accent details or keep just the essentials that you use daily. Everything else should be stored away out of sight.

5. Eliminate the allergens

Allergens and small particles hide in every corner of your home – in the carpets, linen, furniture and even floor. Not only are they often overlooked, but they are also airborne pollutants that can cause allergic reactions.

Dust, mites, mold and dander are hidden hazards in your home that you need to eliminate. You should dust and vacuum regularly, wash your clothes, linen and tiles and consider taking your carpets and mattresses to professional cleaners.

You should also consider getting an effective air purifier for mold spores that are often found in dust. Not only will you keep your indoor air clean and healthy, but you’ll also minimize the risk of allergic reactions.

6. Keep your clothes stored

It’s easy to just throw your clothes over a chair or in a corner of the bedroom. It’s also easy to keep dirty clothes on the floor instead of a laundry hamper.

Keep Your Clothes Stored

However, this only creates unnecessary clutter and makes your everyday life more difficult. Thus, try to always store away clothes after wearing them, keep them neatly organised and wash dirty clothes regularly.

7. Clean regularly

When you postpone cleaning, you only make your job more difficult. You will spend more time and effort trying to get rid of clutter, dusting, vacuuming and tidying up everything.

On the other hand, if you do it regularly, for example once or twice a week, you’ll be able to maintain a healthy and clean home. If necessary, you can even create a cleaning schedule to remind yourself to clean regularly.

8. Keep your pet area clean

If you have indoor pets you need to be extra vigilant when it comes to tidiness and cleanliness.

If you have dogs make sure you air all the rooms in your house as often as possible.  Also make sure your dog is properly potty trained.

If you take your dog out for a walk clean his paws with a baby wipe so he doesn’t track dirt, mud and bacteria into your house.  You could also consider getting booties for your dog.

If you are a cat owner the most important task to keep your home clean is taking care of your cats litter boxes.  Make sure you place the litter box on hardwood flooring instead of a carpeted area if your cats have a tendency to make more of a mess outside the litter box than inside it!  You will find it much easier to clean and sanitize hard surfaces.

9. Freshen up your walls

If you haven’t painted your walls for some time, you should apply a fresh coat of paint. This will brighten up your space and create an airy look.

However, make sure to choose paint that doesn’t contain Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). VOCs are toxic gases that can cause numerous health problems after prolonged exposure.

Thus, try to find healthy, VOC-free paint that meets environmental standards.

Although cleaning might be boring and tiresome, it’s an important task that will help you transform your home into an organised, clean and healthy sanctuary.
